The QEO will host a celebration of women’s football that includes the Thunder taking on Melbourne University from 2pm in the Northern Football League women’s competition.
Earlier in the day the Thunder’s development team will play Kerang from 11.30am in the Northern Country Women’s League.
The day’s celebration also includes a football clinic for primary school girls to be led by AFL Women’s players Hayley Trevean (Carlton) and Elise Strachan (Melbourne) from 1.15pm.
The day will end with a function in the South Bendigo clubrooms from 4.30pm featuring Richmond’s AFL Women’s football operations manager Kate Sheahan, as well as former Thunder players who are now playing in the AFLW competition – Emma Grant (Collingwood), Trevean and Jessica Kennedy (Carlton) and Bella Ayre (Brisbane).
Thunder coach Cherie O’Neill says her side is determined to capitalise on the big day with a strong showing against Melbourne University.
“Hopefully, we get a good crowd along and a lot of kids to take part in the clinic and we can put on a good show and have another strong game,” O’Neill said.
The Thunder have been putting on a good show all year – with two rounds remaining they are undefeated with an average winning margin of 70 points.
“With finals just around the corner, we need to keep working on our structures and ensure our girls don’t get complacent,” O’Neill said.
