For the fourth time in their past five games the Hawks finished on the right side of a one-goal result.
This time around it took a 94th minute goal from coach Greg Thomas for the Hawks to defeat third-placed Shepparton United 3-2.
The Hawks looked home when they led 2-0 with just six minutes remaining, but two late goals by the visitors levelled the scores.
Thomas’ late heroics pinched the three points for the Borough.
“It was good lead-up play by the boys and Riley Hayton played a through ball to me and I finished it off,’’ Thomas said.
“It was a very similar game to the one we played against Shepparton United earlier in the year except this time we came out on top.
“We made things hard for ourselves, but this club has a habit of knowing how to win tight games.”
The Hawks are four points clear of second-placed Shepparton South and they have a game in hand.
Shepparton South overcame a 1-0 deficit to defeat Epsom 3-1 in a physical encounter in Shepparton.
The home side’s physicality and aggression against a young Scorpions side was telling in the 3-1 result.
Shepparton South’s Scottish import Sean Grant scored twice and English import Toby Ferguson added the third in the dying minutes. Epsom teenager Alex Caldow had opened the scoring early in the second half.
Tatura stayed in touch with the top four when it defeated Spring Gully United 5-0.
The Reds defended stoutly until Tatura’s Ben Gannon opened the scoring in injury time in the first half.
That goal forced the game to open up in the second half and Tatura took over.
The home side added four more goals, with Gannon scoring a hat-trick for the match. Jordan Leocata and Brent Mathers added the other two goals for Tatura.
A hat-trick from teenager Bah Blu Htoo Kunoo was the highlight of Golden City’s 4-2 win over Colts United.
The Rams opened the scoring in the 26th minute from a Yassir Alghazaly penalty. One minute later, Kunoo doubled the lead with his first goal. Four minutes into the second half Kunoo sealed the points.
The highly-skilled teen found the back of the net for a third time in the 72nd minute before Colts added two late goals to put some respectability on the scoreboard. It was the Rams’ fourth win of the season and they’re now on the same points as Spring Gully.
