A 26-year-old man told police he was sitting in his ute in Blair Street, Moama, about 11.50pm on Monday when another vehicle parked behind it.
Two males then got out of the vehicle and attacked the man with an iron bar or something similar, and dragged him from the ute.
Deniliquin Detective Acting Inspector Trent Swinton said the man was assisting investigators with their inquiries and it was not a random act.
“I wish to allay any concerns the broader community may have surrounding this incident with respect to their general safety in and around Moama,” he said.
“From the inquiries conducted by the investigation team to date I can confirm that the incident was not random in nature.”
The offenders fled in the man’s silver Holden Rodeo and the car they arrived in. The man was left at the scene and found by a passerby before being taken to Echuca Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police are still searching for the man’s ute, along with the two offenders.
The first offender is described as a male Caucasian about 180cm tall, medium build, with dark short hair, aged in his late 20s and wearing dark clothing.
The second offender is described as a male Caucasian about 190cm tall, thin build, bald and wearing dark clothing.
The vehicle stolen was a silver, single-cab, tray-back Holden Rodeo with a Victorian registration number of QBQ 948.
