Cast and crew members of Nexus Youth Theatre’s production were elated when they received a letter from British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber.
“With all good wishes for a wonderful opening night and an enjoyable and successful run,” wrote the man also responsible for hit shows Cats and Jesus Christ Superstar.
And Mr Webber is not the only theatre bigwig throwing their support behind the Bendigo show.
Cast members of the London production – still running after more than three decades – have sent a video message to the young cast.
Andrea Creighton, who toured Australia in the role of Carlotta, has even invited her Bendigo protege, Tara Glozier, for a private singing lesson.
Nexus is the first youth theatre group in the southern hemisphere granted the rights to perform Phantom.
The musical, which won seven Tonys in 1987, follows Gaston Leroux’s novella about a ghost living underneath the stage of a Paris opera house.
The production plays at The Capital from July 27. Visit www.thecapital.com.au for tickets.
