Collated by independent research firm JWS Research, responses from 400 Mount Alexander Shire Council residents found overall satisfaction with their local government’s performance grew six percentage points in the last year, from 52 per cent to 58 per cent.
The shire was just below the statewide satisfaction average of 59, but was significantly higher than the average for councils in the large rural group (54).
Younger ratepayers, aged 18-34, were “significantly more favourable” in their view of council’s performance, according to the survey, resulting in a score of 65.
The maintenance of unsealed roads and the condition of local streets and footpaths were the worst performing areas, with scores of 46 each.
“Councillors are delighted with the improved levels of satisfaction, and are pleased that the working relationships and teamwork across all of council are reflected in the results,” said Mount Alexander Shire Council mayor Sharon Telford.
The shire’s top performing area for the second year in a row was community and cultural services with a score of 73, while customer service and the appearance of public areas followed with a score of 70.
