The ‘Coliban Option’ – a brine lagoon in Epsom which has been created to prevent rising groundwater – laced with hydrogen sulphide, arsenic, dissolved salts and other metals – spilling into waterways in and around Bendigo.
A Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning confirmed the ‘Coliban Option’, which is nearing completion, is expected to be in place for four years.
“During this time, the interim solution will help inform options for a permanent solution, together with a consultation period involving technical experts and their ideas from across the industry," he said.
Meanwhile, the use of environmental water is being examined by a state government committee with public submissions due August 25.
