United defeated Spring Gully United 5-1 to notch their eighth win from nine games.
But a superior goal difference (42 to 38) has United on top, with Epsom also hitting ther halfway mark of the season with eight wins and 24 points.
Shepparton United had five individual goal scorers, with Chelsea Georgiou, Megan Mcfarland, Gabrielle Dwyer, Sarah Loverso and Pippa Grabham all hitting the back of the net.
Nicole Ford was the lone goal scorer for Spring Gully, which starts the second half of the season in eighth place.
Strathdale youngster Ellie Vlaeminck produced the performance of the round, booting five goals in a convincing 7-1 win over Swan Hill.
Her five-goal haul moved Vlaeminck to the top of the goal scorers table with 22, one ahead of Scorpions sharp-shooter Tara Thomas and two in front of Colts United star Rebecca Berry.
Kelsie Rowlands also scored twice for the third-placed Blues.
At Shadforth No.1, Moama-Echuca Border Raiders prevailed in an entertaining contest over Golden City 6-2.
The sixth-placed Border Raiders were boosted by a pair of goals from Natalie Sands, while youngster Letesha Bawden scored twice for the Rams, who also got singles from Silver Bell Morris and Drew Barker.
The in-form Sands now has seven goals for the season.
At Shepparton South, the host team defeated Eaglehawk 4-2.
