Rural firefighters whose service has lasted as long as six decades were acknowledged at a function in their honour last week.

Eleven Elmore fire brigade volunteers with almost 300 years of service between them were recognised for commitment to their community.
Among them was Ian Lonsdale; the man received the National Emergency Medal for his 58 years with the emergency service, which include stints as lieutenant and captain, as well as coach of junior brigades and running teams.
Leading the Bendigo Easter parade and Elmore Anzac Day march were among the veteran’s contributions.
Victoria’s emergency management commissioner, Craig Lapsley, presented Mr Lonsdale with his award as well as a lifetime membership of the Country Fire Authority.
Mr Lonsdale showed no signs of turning in his uniform, either, telling those in attendance he planned on serving the CFA as long as he “[remained] upright”.
Also congratulated for their long service were Louis Strawhorn (40 years), Kenneth Wills (35 years), Douglas Strawhorn (35 years), Paul Maber (30 years), Rowan Lonsdale (30 years), Colin Walker (20 years), Glenn Trewick (20 years), Graham McKenzie (20 years), Jeffrey A’Vard (15 years), Raymond Wedd (10 years), and Roslyn Maber (10 years).
The brigade is currently looking for new recruits to volunteer alongside long-serving crew members.
There are currently 36 members of the Elmore fire brigade who responds to more than 60 emergency calls every year.
