The annual scholarships are named in honour of the late Bishop Joe Grech, who is well-remembered for his regard for young people and passion for education.
Matthew is an active member of his school and has been a member of its faith and justice team since Year 7.
“I do like being part of a community and a sense of getting involved,” the Year 11 student said.
While he was not yet sure what he wanted to do with the scholarship, worth up to $1000, Matthew said he would like to put it back into doing something for the school community.
He said it would allow him to become more involved in his community and develop his leadership skills further.
Matthew plans to continue his active role within the community beyond his schooling.
“In the future, I want to be able to make a difference… and I think that starts with being involved in school,” he said.
St Augustine’s College Kyabram’s Alex Plummer also received a scholarship.
“I was very excited; I feel sincerely grateful I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to do it,” Alex said.
The Year 10 student’s scholarship will go towards flights to East Timor, where his school runs educational programs.
St Augustine’s students have been fundraising to buy music and sewing equipment for the programs, and when Alex goes over he will help deliver a sewing program.
Catholic Education Sandhurst director Paul Desmond said the scholarships helped carry on the legacy of Bishop Joe, while also giving students the opportunity to take their passion and skills further.
“Anything that we’re able to do to help every child reach his or her potential, we should do,” he said.
