Greer will miss the remainder of 2017 and will wait on further medical advice to determine if he returns to the field next year.
“I’m absolutely crushed to have received the news as I live and breath footy and love playing the game,’’ Greer said in a statement.
“I have put endless time and effort into the game and have always tried to get the best out of myself…. for something like this to happen and at the age of 25 is hard to process.
“I will miss playing the game that has given me so much and, more importantly, I will miss running out with such a great group of blokes for the remainder of the year.
“As much as it hurts right now, I know I have other things to look forward to in my life and coaching affords me the opportunity to continue to grow my footy knowledge and stay part of the club I love.”
Greer’s injury is a major blow for the rebuilding Roos.
Greer has been one of the club’s top three players in his four years at the club.
The Roos (2-7) play Golden Square (7-2) at Wade Street on Saturday.
