LAST weekend’s start to the second half of the Heathcote District league season produced two results resembling nothing like what transpired in round one.

Lockington-Bamawm United thumped Mount Pleasant by 74 points to win its first game of the season, while Elmore defeated White Hills by seven points in what were a pair of results that combined were 221-point swings from round one.
Back in round one the Blues had opened their season with a 42-point victory over the Cats and the Demons had trounced the Bloods by 98 points.
However, those result reversals from last weekend pale into insignificance in comparison to some of the most dramatic across the Bendigo, Heathcote District and Loddon Valley leagues over the past decade.
The biggest result swing through the past 10 years has been a massive 216-point turnaround in Kyneton and Eaglehawk’s two home and away clashes in 2009.
Kyneton caused a massive boilover in round three that season on a memorable Sunday afternoon at the Showgrounds.
In what would prove to be their only win of the season, the Tigers defeated the two-time defending premier Hawks by eight points, 11.10 (76) to 10.8 (68).
However, when the two sides met again nine rounds later at Canterbury Park, the Hawks made a mess of the Tigers with a 208-point annihilation as they won 39.21 (255) to 7.5 (47), with Eaglehawk captain Brady Herdman kicking 12 goals and taking 19 marks.
Meanwhile, the first of what has become seven-straight Bridgewater premierships in the Loddon Valley league featured a significant result reversal totaling 160 points against Calivil United in 2010.
On the back of a 10-goal haul from Kurt Ashman, which included six in the first 13 minutes, the Mean Machine decimated the Demons by 115 points in a one-sided grand final at Backhaus Oval.
But when they had previously met in round 14, the Demons won by 45 points as they inflicted the Mean Machine’s only loss of the season.
The Bridgewater-Calivil United result reversals of 2010 rank No.2 in the Loddon Valley through the past decade, with it surpassed by the 180-point swing in the two home and away clashes between Bears Lagoon-Serpentine and YCW in 2007 when the Bears won by 56 points in round seven, before the Eagles triumphed by 124 in round 16.
One of the more remarkable turnarounds during the timeframe featured North Bendigo and Huntly in the Heathcote District league last year in a pair of results that showed that – just as the saying goes – a week is a long time in footy.
The Bulldogs rounded out their home and away season with a 124-point hiding of Huntly.
The two sides were then pitted against each other one week later in the qualifying final, with the Hawks orchestrating a 133-point swing as they bounced back with a nine-point victory.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the boys. This week we didn’t lose belief in how we wanted to play the game,” Huntly coach Jamie Hogan said after the win.
Perhaps a reminder of that turnaround last year won’t go astray for the Hawks this weekend as they again prepare to take on the Bulldogs, who they copped a 149-point belting off back in round one.
