For many, winter is synonymous with curling up with a good book and hibernating for a good spell. The Words in Winter embraces this notion in part, but encourages you to celebrate books, stories and idea among literary friends.

Founded by Daylesford resident David Hall in 2002, the annual festival draws locals and visitors alike with readings, presentations and book launches, and has flourished to grow beyond the spa town to a regional literary and arts festival that emcompasses neaby towns such as Trentham, Clunes, Creswick, Newstead and Maryborough.
The festival was saved from the risk of closure last year by Maia Irell, who has lived in Daylesford for 10 years. She runs the festival with the help of Ambassador of Words Kevin Childs, Director of Operations Matt Fisher and Creative Director Missy Dempsey.
The 2017 Words in Winter theme is Origins, with Daylesford playing host to guest speakers such as award-winning author Don Watson and prominent human rights activist, Julian Burnside, QC.
Daylesford's resident storyteller Anne E. Stewart will open her storyhouse (www.storyhouseandgarden.com) for stories about refugees and immigrants and short story and poetry competitions will be run across the region.
All towns are included in the annual crosstown crossword puzzle at their local libraries on Saturday morning, August 5.
