UPDATE, TUESDAY 3pm: A man in his 40s remains in hospital in a serious condition following the shooting.
The man was flown by air ambulance to The Royal Melbourne Hospital on Friday in a critical condition.
A spokesperson for Ambulance Victoria said the man suffered injuries to his upper body.
Police are continuing to guard the McGregor Street address where the shooting occurred.
Crime scene officers are photographing and bagging evidence at the scene where the drug laboratory was also found.
UPDATE, TUESDAY 11.30am: Police remain at the scene in McGregor Street, where the weatherboard house has been under police guard since Friday.
Entrance to the property is blocked off with police tape, as is access to a creek which runs alongside the block.
Police are also preventing people from travelling on a dirt road behind the house.
Detectives and police officers came and went from the scene on Monday and a hazardous waste collection company arrived mid-morning.
Crime scene officers dressed in yellow suits, masks and gloves continue to work at the scene under marquees erected near the house.
MONDAY: The Victoria Police armed crime squad is on scene in Castlemaine after a man was shot at a rural property where a clandestine laboratory was found.
Police are now searching for a man, believed to be armed.
The victim presented at a Castlemaine hospital about 3pm on Friday with a gunshot wound, believed to be to the neck. He remains in hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The shooting occurred at a property on McGregor Street in Castlemaine about 2.30pm that day.
A clandestine laboratory was also located at the property and a warrant has since been issued for a 50-year-old man in regards to trafficking and manufacturing drugs.
Armed Crime Squad detectives are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
It is believed the man was driving a white Toyota Hilux utility, registration PRY 011 and was last seen in the Castlemaine area last Friday.
He is described as Caucasian in appearance, 190cm tall with a solid build and short grey hair.
The man is possibly armed with a firearm and police urge anyone that may see him to call triple zero and not to approach him.
