Southern Cross Cheerleading, which includes the Bendigo trio of Maddy Theobald, 20, Ashlee Richmond, 19, and Arizona Davies, 14, and is based in Northcote recently took on the best in the world at the Cheerleading World Championships in Florida and finished seventh.
The team competed in the International Open All Girl Level 5 division.
“We competed against 43 teams from 32 different countries and to place seventh in the world at our first time competing at the championships was an amazing effort,” Theobald said this week.
“All the girls put in a lot of hard work leading into the championships, training every day, sometimes twice a day.”
The annual Cheerleading World Championships are by invite only from the host country.
“The Cheerleading World Championships are the Olympics for our sport… it’s the biggest event each year,” Theobald said.
“To compete at the World Championships has been a dream of ours since the three of us started cheerleading in Bendigo.”
Richmond and Davies are both flyers (they are thrown up in the air), while Theobald is a base (she throws her team-mates in the air).
