The forecast suggests a possible shower for Bendigo on Thursday night, but on Friday there will be a very high chance of rain, with precipitation of between 15 and 40 millimetres expected.
If Bendigo receives rain of 40mm on Friday, it will come close to exceeding its average rainfall for the entire month in one day.
The rain is forecast to continue into Saturday.
The rest of the region is expected to experience similar weather, although the rain will be lighter further south.
Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Scott Williams said there could also be isolated storms that would deliver heavy rain.
Daytime temperatures on Thursday and Friday will vary across the region from 16 to 20 degrees, with lows of 7 to 11 degrees.
The rain band will move over a large swathe of the country, with the heaviest falls expected to hit Queensland.
