Think and Feel: Abstract Art in the FM Courtis Collection, displays works from a collection originally assembled by Bendigo Teachers’ College, which became part of the Faculty of Education of La Trobe University in 1991.
Mr Fred M. Courtis, lecturer and later head of art education at the college, began the collection so students and staff would have daily contact with original artworks, and to help foster a sense of national identity.
Unable to afford the grandest pieces of the time, with his astute eye Courtis was able to select more affordable works that were nonetheless excellent examples of Australian art.
Artists featured include Robert Jacks, Roger Kemp, John Coburn, and Billy Nolan Tjapangati.
Think and Feel is on show until Sunday, June 18, at LAI, 121 View Street, Bendigo.
