The Dogs were two goals down at the last change, but finished the game off well to win 13.5 (83) to 12.10 (82) at Wade Street on Saturday.
Sandhurst Marist Dockers proved too good for Strathfieldsaye. The Dockers led at every change and won 7.12 (54) to 5.6 (36).
The remaining five grading games were lopsided, with Eaglehawk reserves defeating Strathfieldsaye reserves by 40 points, White Hills reserves outclassed Maiden Gully YCW reserves by 112 points, Eaglehawk seniors belted Sandhurst reserves by 210 points, Kangaroo Flat seniors beat Castlemaine reserves by 62 points, Kyneton reserves had a 136-point win over Kangaroo Flat reserves and South Bendigo seniors defeated Maryborough reserves by 114 points.
Kyneton’s senior team scored a five-goal win over Strathfieldsaye seniors in the most impressive performance in the under-14 grading games.
The Tigers won 13.10 (88) to 9.4 (58).
Sandhurst seniors scored a four-goal win over Golden Square seniors, while Kangaroo Flat reserves gave Sandhurst Marist Dockers seniors a 71-point hiding.
White Hills reserves defeated South Bendigo by 15 goals and, in the closest game of the round, Kangaroo Flat reserves held off Kyneton reserves by four points.
In the 17 under-12 grading games played over the weekend just one game had a single-figure margin. The average winning margin across the round was 58.2 points.
The closest game was Heathcote’s three-point win over Eaglehawk C – 5.6 (36) to 5.3 (33). In lopsided results, St Francis A outclassed Golden Square A by 134 points, St Therese’s B thrashed Maiden Gully YCW C by 154 points and Castlemaine B defeated South Bendigo B by 117 points.
The under-18 girls and under-15 girls competitions played their second rounds of the home and away season.
In the under-18s, Castlemaine won its first game of the season when it defeated North Bendigo by 112 points.
Woorinen stamped itself as one of the teams to beat when it kept Golden Square scoreless in its 149-point win.
Kangaroo Flat kept Kyneton scoreless and won by 75 points, while Eaglehawk didn’t kick a goal in its 19-point loss to South Bendigo.
Strathfieldsaye and Sandhurst are the only undefeated teams after two rounds in the under-15 competition.
The Storm defeated Eaglehawk by 17 points at the weekend, while Sandhurst scored a 26-point win over Golden Square. In the final game, Kyneton beat Kangaroo Flat by 106 points.
