The cast and crew are the first youth theatre group in the southern hemisphere to perform Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera.
In his second show, Mason Hingston will take on the role of The Phantom while first timers Erin Mannix and Kody Austin have been cast as Christine and Raoul.
“It's a demanding role but it's such a famous role. To get it is ridiculous,” Hingston said. “The way Andrew Lloyd Webber writes, I just love all the harmonies and counter-melodies work together.”
Mannix said taking on the iconic musical was amazing.
“It’s not very often you get to play these huge roles,” she said. “So it is an amazing opportunity to learn the skills that come with being the leads in such a well-known musical. Maybe the most well-known musical ever.”
Austin was surprised to get his lead role as Raoul.
“Andrew Lloyd Webber is so well known and the characters are great. I was beside myself when got my role,” he said.
Nexus’ production of The Phantom of the Opera is on from July 27 to 29 and August 3 to 5 at The Capital. Tickets are on sale from Monday, May 1.
The youth theatre group has been support by Strategem since they formed in 2010.
