Local music legends Ethanol will reunite for one more gig.
The four-piece band last played in 2010 after playing together for 11 years and producing two studio albums and a live album that was part of their farewell efforts.
Consisting of Albert “Skip” Skipper out front, Tyson Hodges on guitar, Dan Guille on bass and Colin Thompson on drums, Ethanol were regular performers at the Golden Vine and Newmarket Hotel and even built a small fan base in Melbourne.
“We probably needed a break from each other as much as anything,” Thompson said.
“We'd been going at it fairly consistently for 11 years to that point. Plus we all had plenty of other projects on the go that we wanted to give time to.”
The idea for a reunion was sparked on Facebook by local musician Deano Stanton.
“Dan was the one who suggested a reunion gig. The spark had been lit by a plea from Deano Stanton on Facebook and we joked about it, without thinking too much about it,” Thompson said.
“But Dan evidently thought it a good idea. When he raised it with the rest of us, we probably took all of a couple of minutes to think about it before saying: 'stuff it, why not!'
“The last time we were all on a stage together was or farewell gig in Rosalind Park in December, 2010.”
Thompson said playing festival slots in Apollo Bay, Brunswick and Queenscliff were highlights along with a gig at The Gershwin Room at the Espy in St Kilda.
“We were never big, but we were fun and had a good crew of loyal followers, both here and, to a certain degree, in Melbourne,” he said.
“There were some wicked nights in venues of all sizes. The Gershwin Room at the Espy was a blast.
“Our home games at the Vine and at the Newy though were probably the best fun of all though – especially in the early to mid noughties.
“Sharing grooves and having fun with our friends was why we started the band and that was what was great about it throughout.”
Ethanol have been back in rehearsals for a number of weeks to preapre for waht is sure to be a big night of music at the Golden Vine.
“There’s no new material, but we've blown the dust off quite a collection of tunes from the old repertoire,” Thompson.
“We've had quite a few requests from the time we announced the gig so there will be tunes from all three albums. If you're not up for loud thumping grooves and a high energy output, I'd suggest being somewhere else on Saturday night.”
Ethanol’s reunion gig is at the Golden Vine on Saturday, April 29. Doors open at 9pm and entry is $10.
