May is a very busy month at the Gallery with a range of wonderful programs and events to suit a variety of visitors.
OPEN DRAW: 3.30 - 5pm every Thursday in May
In our current exhibition, Collective vision: 130 years, a number of exciting and unusual works, along with much-loved favourites, will be on display.
To explore these further, everyone is invited to participate in free afternoon drawing sessions in the Gallery guided by our Education Officer.
Suitable for all ages and abilities. Bookings preferred.
GALLERY GIGGLES: 10:30am Thursday May 4
Parents and little ones are invited to come along for Gallery Giggles – a short session of stories, songs and a taste of art for children aged up to five years.
Mums, dads and carers do need to stay and enjoy the fun! Held on the first Thursday of every month during the school term. Bookings preferred. Free.
EASTERN AND WESTERN ART: 12.30pm Saturday May 6 @ La Trobe Arts Institute, 121 View St
Adam Bushby, lawyer and art history graduate, will speak about the theme of Orientalism in painting, starting with the Gallery collection and tracing the long history of representing Islamic and other Eastern people and culture in Western painting. Free.
Workshop - RESPONDING TO LANDSCAPE 10.30am – 3.30pm Sunday May 7
Artist Mark Dober will present an opportunity to reflect upon and reinterpret the landscapes on display in the Gallery’s current 130th exhibition through this practical workshop.
Participants will combine wet and dry media, complementing the delicacy and transparency of watercolour with the boldness of oil pastel in the unique environment of the Gallery. Limited numbers are available and all materials provided. DIY lunch. Cost is $45 members, $65 non-members. Auslan interpretation available by prior arrangement.
ART & TEA: Wednesday May 17: 10am Morning tea, 10:30am Guest speaker event @ La Trobe Arts Institute, 121 View St
Abdul Abdullah, who works across painting, photography, video, installation and performance, will provide insight into his practice. Presented by the Friends of Bendigo Art Gallery entry is free. Hearing loop available. No bookings required, limited numbers.
