A HEAD wound sustained by a Bendigo man during his arrest after a six-hour stand-off in Jackass Flat is still “weeping and bleeding” one month later, a court has been told.
Kayd Thorp, 31, appeared by video link in the Bendigo Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, where his defence counsel Robert Timms described the current situation as “outrageous”.
Thorp sustained a cut to his scalp and lost consciousness during the arrest. He was treated in hospital prior to his first court appearance on March 29.
But Mr Timms said Thorp’s injuries had not been treated since he arrived at the Metropolitan Remand Centre.
“His injury is still weeping and bleeding one month later,” he said.
“He suffered a significant head injury.”
Thorp is facing more than 20 charges, including reckless conduct endangering serious injury, possessing an unregistered handgun, criminal damage, handling stolen goods and theft of a motor vehicle.
The critical incident response team and dog squad were called in during the stand-off on Howard Street on March 28, when Thorp allegedly holed himself up in a house.
Thorp suffers from a serious psychiatric condition, the court was told.
Mr Timms also requested video footage of the arrest be provided to the defence before Thorp’s next court appearance on May 15.
“There were a number of video recordings of the arrest. We requested copies and they have not arrived,” he said.
“We request the prosecution provide us with that material as soon as possible.”
During an earlier court appearance, Mr Timms alleged Thorp was “struck to the head a number of times” during the arrest.
Magistrate John Murphy ordered Thorp’s injury be treated.
“I’ll put down that he has a head injury that requires to be looked at,” he said.
Thorp did not apply for bail.
