Buchanan achieved a time of 3 minutes 49 seconds in the 1500m at the weekend’s Triton Invite in San Diego.
The Bendigo University Athletics Club member said it was a slowly-run contest on the opening 800m.
“The Kenyan who outkicked me at the finish is a former NCAA 800m champ, indoor and outdoor,” Buchanan said of the Triton clash.
Next hit-out for the 26-year-old distance running ace will be a 5km duel in the Oxy Invite in Los Angeles on May 6.
Buchanan started his US campaign by being second in a 5000m race at the Mt Sac Relays on Good Friday.
Over summer, Buchanan broke the Flack Advisory Bendigo Region Athletics Centre record for the 3000m, running a slashing time of 8 minutes 20.25 seconds.
He also broke the Bendigo residential record for the 10km when he ran 29:17.03 at Landy Field in Geelong.
