Holmes was originally left out of the 58-man squad for next month’s clash with Ballarat, but coach Brett Fitzpatrick added the aggressive midfielder after he kicked five goals and was one of Sandhurst’s best players in the Dragons’ 199-point hiding of Castlemaine.
Fitzpatrick said midfield depth was the BFNL’s strength.
“If 90 per cent of the midfielders named in the squad make themselves available then we’re going to be very strong through the middle,’’ Fitzpatrick said.
The addition to the league of classy on-ballers Clinton Young, Andy Collins, Simon Seddon, Jonothan Lanyon, and the return of Josh Bowe, gives Fitzpatrick plenty of artillery and options.
“We’re a little bit light on for key forward options, so we might have to be creative with how we use our midfielders,’’ Fitzpatrick said.
South Bendigo recruit Kaiden Antonowicz looks set to provide a spark in the BFNL forward line after his seven-goal haul against Gisborne last Saturday.
“At this stage, no-one has pulled out of the squad, which is a good sign,’’ Fitzpatrick said.
“It’s a great opportunity this year for the league to play Ballarat at the QEO and we’d expect the players to put their hand up to play.”
The squad will train at Camp Reserve on Wednesday night and May 3. The final session will be at the QEO on May 11, with the clash against Ballarat on May 13. BFNL training squad:
