Ripples of respectful applause greeted service men and women during their march to the to the Soliders Memorial Institute for the Anzac Day service on Tuesday.

Thousands of locals lined Pall Mall to pay their respects, which was followed by a sombre, moving service intertwined by the angelic tones of The Bendigo Youth Choir. 

The Bendigo District RSL Sub-Branch-led service began with the traditional laying of the wreaths, and was bookmarked by Flight Lieutenant Naomi Holmes, who delivered the Anzac address. 

Flt Lt Holmes, who grew up in Bendigo, said Anzac Day was a chance to remember those who served (past and present) on our behalf, rather than celebrate battle or glorify war.

“Anzac Day is more than a national holiday, it is a fundamental Australian tradition,” Flt Lt Homes said. 

“Anzac Day is also a spirit. It exists in each one of us.

“Today is a celebration of those who in times of extreme hardship displayed courage, discipline, self-reliance, resourcefulness and friendship.”

Flt Lt Homes reminded onlookers this year marked the 75^th anniversary of the bombing of Darwin, where 240 people were killed during two attacks by Japanese forces.

“The bombing was indiscriminate,” Flt Lt Homes said.

“It remains the single largest and devastating attack by a foreign power on our nation and it brought war to Australian shores for the first time.

“We must never forget their service and sacrifice – those who lost their lives trying to defend Darwin.” 

The bombing was also an opportunity to reflect how fortunate Australia has been, that war has rarely visited our shores, Flt Lt Homes said.

“Those serving our country could only do so with the support of their families,” Flt Lt Homes said.

“This too is part of the Anzac spirit and the dedication of those who support our service men and women must also be remembered.

“Let us strive to be worthy of those whose memories we honour on Anzac Day.”
