Castlemaine police Leading Senior Constable Dave White said a man veered across Hitchcock Street in heavy rain and became lodged on the train line at 11.10pm on Monday.
A CFA crew used a crane to remove the car from the tracks and the line was cleared by 1.30am on Tuesday.
The man, 55, suffered minor lacerations and soreness to his shoulder and was conveyed to Bendigo hospital for observations, Leading Senior Constable White said.
V/Line spokesperson Rob Curtain said the incident stopped two Bendigo-bound trains at Kyneton.
“Customers on the 10.22pm Southern Cross Station to Bendigo train and a special 10.53pm Southern Cross Station football train were transferred to coaches at Kyneton to complete their journeys,” he said.
“The incident meant the train for this morning’s Bendigo to Southern Cross service at 7.30am was out of position, and it originated at Kyneton.”
Customers travelling from Bendigo were provided with a replacement coach service to Melbourne, he said.
The incident will not affect passengers travelling to Melbourne for the traditional ANZAC day clash, with the Bendigo-Southern Cross service operating to a Saturday timetable.
