In the first 10 days of Operation Nexus, Senior Sergeant Ian Brooks from Bendigo Highway Patrol said more than 700 offences had been detected throughout the policing division, with nearly 300 of them in the Bendigo area.
Senior Sergeant Brooks said police officers were “dumbfounded” by some of the behaviour they had seen.
At the weekend two men were charged with traffic offences after two separate incidents in Epsom and Huntly.
One of the men was allegedly recorded driving in excess of 180km/h in a 70km/h zone before crashing into a pole, causing a widespread power outage.
Senior Sergeant Brooks said officers would not hesitate to prosecute anyone caught breaking the law.
“We’re not interested in being nice and worried about whether or not you have a licence, because everyone is better off if you’re not on the road, if you’re going to drive like that,” Senior Sergeant Brooks said.
He urged people to be especially careful travelling on Anzac Day, because of the volume of people that would be around.
He said this was particularly important in small towns, where services and marches were likely to be held on the highways.
“People need to slow down, take their time and be a little bit more careful with what’s going on around them,” Senior Sergeant Brooks said.
