Police intercepted the 32-year-old man in his Holden Commodore on Napier Street, White Hills, about 3.30am.
He blew over the limit and was taken back to Bendigo police station, where he gave a reading of 0.259 – more than five times the legal limit.
His licence was immediately suspended and his car was impounded. The cost to recover an impounded car is at least $1200.
The man has been summonsed to appear at the Bendigo Magistrates’ Court at a later date.
He will face a mandatory two years off the road, subject to extra penalties from a magistrate.
Sergeant Steve Cunningham said the reading was among the highest seen in Bendigo in recent times.
He said drivers with readings above 0.2 usually struggle to maintain balance and co-ordination.
