In a remarkable grand final rematch scoreline on Saturday, the Demons defeated the reigning premiers 15.12 (102) to 0.4 (4) at Charlton in a game played in heavy rain from the second term.
After unfurling their premiership flag, the Navies kicked one behind in the first quarter, three points in the second and didn’t score in the second half.
“They’ve had a lot of turnover over the summer and had some handy players out, as did we, but it was surprising to keep them to no goals,” Demons coach Julian Bull said.
While the Navies failed to kick a goal, Demons’ star Corey Jones opened the season with a haul of seven to be one of his side’s best, along with Boe Bish, James Coatsworth and Matt Riordan.
Sean O’Connor, Sam O’Connor and stand-in coach Anthony Judd were the Navies’ best.
• Sea Lake Nandaly Tigers dominated the second half in its 55-point win over St Arnaud at home.
The Saints led by one point at half-time, before the Tigers – the only home side to win in round one – added 16 goals to six after the break to prevail 23.12 (150) to 14.11 (95).
Billy McInnes bagged five goals for the Tigers, who also had Kyle Brasser, Ryan O’Sullivan and Jacob Schaper kick three, while Luke Martin was named their best.
Jacob Tillig and Matthew Goode battled hard for the Saints, who had Nick Coghlan kick four goals. Former Footscray and Fremantle AFL player Daniel Hargreaves kicked one in his first game for his new club.
• Donald held Boort scoreless in both the first and final quarters in its 39-point victory.
The Royals prevailed 10.12 (72) to 4.9 (33) at Boort.
Daniel Pearce, coach Tom Bell and Darcy Harrison (three goals) were prominent for the Royals.
The Magpies had good players in Keiren Wilson, new coach Corey Gregg and reigning Feeny medallist James Orr in the ruck.
• Five goals from recruit Stephen Paulke helped Birchip-Watchem to a 12.12 (84) to 8.4 (52) victory over Wedderburn.
The Bulls kicked four goals to one in the final term to break away from the Redbacks.
Lochlan Sirett, coach Tom Carland and Paulke led the way for the Bulls, while the Redbacks were best served by Ben DeAraugo and Jordan Hargreaves.
