The dawning of a new era for the Maiden Gully YCW Eagles begins on Saturday with the opening round of the 2017 Loddon Valley Football-Netball League season.
The Maiden Gully YCW Eagles have been formed out of a merger between the Maiden Gully Junior Football Club and YCW Sporting and Social Club and will play its home games at Marist College, starting in round four on April 22.
On Saturday the Eagles will take to the field and court for the first time at Inglewood.
“There’s been a fantastic buzz around the club and everyone is really looking forward to what’s the start of a new era,” Maiden Gully YCW Eagles president Chris Garlick said on Friday.
“We are now the Maiden Gully community’s club, and from the very first day we met with the Maiden Gully Junior Football Club, we hit it off sensationally and it’s a great fit for both clubs.
“The fit is perfect because YCW started at under-16s and Maiden Gully effectively finished at under-14s.”
The Eagles’ new football and netball uniforms encompass YCW’s history of blue and white, as well as incorporating orange to signify the beginning of the new era.
The Maiden Gully YCW Eagles will field football teams starting from the under-nine age group and netball teams from minis.
“Over the past four years we’ve spent a lot of time looking at the future sustainability of the club,” Garlick said.
“We included life members and stalwarts of the club in those discussions and they are all 100 per cent behind the move.
“It provides sustainability, an identity and longevity for the club.”
While the Eagles will now play their home games at Marist College in Maiden Gully, the club will continue to train at Backhaus Oval this year as there are no lights at the Marist College oval yet.
As part of the formation of Maiden Gully YCW Eagles, a new club song had to be developed.
The club sought submissions from its members, of which 15 were received and seven were voted on by the Eagles’ senor and junior committee.
The winning submission was a song penned to the tune of the Western Bulldogs song:
We're from the west
Orange, White and Blue
We'll come out fighting
Eagles through and through
With Lions bite and Eagles claw
We’ll give our very best
You can't beat the boys / girls of the Eagle breed
We're the team of the mighty West.
Saturday’s round one LVFNL games – Calivil United v Mitiamo, Newbridge v Pyramid Hill, Inglewood v Maiden Gully YCW Eagles, Bridgewater v BL-Serpentine. Marong bye.
