ADAM Nicolson is hoping for a first-rate start to his Victorian road racing motorcycle championship defence this weekend at Broadford
The Bendigo rider is the reigning formula 400 state champion.
He enters the four round championship series fresh from a dominant title win in 2016.
Nicolson, 40, finished top three in all four rounds for three wins and a second.
"It was a pretty consistent series for me. One of the rounds that I did win, I didn't finish any better than third best in each race, but people fell off and stuff like that," he said.
Nicolson warmed up for his championship round by contesting an event at Mount Gambier's famed Mac Park last weekend.
He said his foray into South Australia had given him a good glimpse of what to expect during this year's championship series.
"I was quicker than I've ever been over there, so I am really looking forward to going to Broadford," Nicolson said.
"Going on Mac Park, the opposition will be fast.
"I didn't know what to expect over in Mount Gambier, which was a round of the Hartwell club championships and South Australian championships.
"I went over there mainly for practice.
"I went well, up in the top three, so after doing that I am very excited about Broadford.”
Nicolson has been competing in road racing for the past 10 years.
Last year's state title was not his first, with his breakthrough win coming in the Thunderbike series in 2008.
"After moving up in class, I hadn't been able to win a Victorian championship again until last year," he said.
"I use to ride supermoto, which is a combination of road and dirt, but I've been mainly concentrating on the road the last couple of years."
The championship includes two rounds at Broadford, and one each at Winton and Phillip Island.
Racing this weekend is on Saturtday and Sunday.
