The council will bring in a waterway management and maintenance specialist company to remove curly pondweed.
Parks and natural reserves manager Debbie Wood said the weed was commonly found in shallow lakes that had a high nutrient content.
“It’s been over 10 years since we’ve had this level of weed growth at Lake Weeroona and we have secured the services of Australian Aquatic Solutions, who will use an aquatic vessel to harvest the weeds,” Ms Wood said.
“The harvesting work is expected to commence on April 3 and should take several days to complete.
“The work will benefit all users of the Lake and generally improve the look of the area.”
The council was also planning to apply for a permit to remove some vegetation on islands to tackle problems with birds.
“The Ibis breeding season coming to an end and the majority of birds have now moved on from the islands at Lake Weeroona.,” she said.
“The City will now apply for a permit to undertake some vegetation removal on the islands to deter the birds from nesting in such numbers next breeding season.
“Moving the birds on without a permit is illegal and the City has been working with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning to sustainably manage native bird populations at local parkland reserves including here at Lake Weeroona.”
