The 17.7 kilometre trail begins at Maldon Station, goes through Muckleford and ends at Castlemaine while running parallel to the heritage Victorian Goldfields Railway.
The trail is funded under the state government’s Local Infrastructure Fund who provided $800,000 of the total project cost of $1,011,000.
It is hoped that by improving the tourist offering in the Goldfields region, more people will come to stay in local towns, spending money in the local business and helping to boost the economy.
Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards said it would be good news for local hotels, restaurants and businesses.
“The Castlemaine to Maldon Walking and Cycling Trail will allow locals and visitors to enjoy our stunning natural surroundings as they travel alongside the historic Goldfields Railway,” she said.
“Victoria’s beautiful natural terrain and picturesque trails makes it just the place for visitors from all over Australia to come and cycle.”
