Echuca-Moama teen Isaiah Firebrace will represent his country at the world’s biggest song contest, Eurovision.
Broadcaster SBS made the announcement on their website this afternoon.
Firebrace will compete against 42 other acts in Kyiv, Ukraine between May 9 and 13.
The 17-year-old singer will perform new number Don’t Come Easy. The song is written by DNA, the duo responsible for Dami Im’s runner-up song Sound of Silence.
Firebrace first won public acclaim when he was crowned The X Factor winner last November.
While some Australians are yet to hear of Isaiah Firebrace, he is already experiencing global success, with his first single It’s Gotta Be You certified platinum in Sweden.
“Even though it has been a dream of mine, never did I think for one minute it would be a possibility,” Firebrace said of his selection.
“I will make Australia proud.”
SBS Managing Director Michael Ebeid said: “Isaiah is a young artist who beautifully embodies the Australian spirit with his passion, hard work and humility, not to mention immense talent at just 17 years old.
“We are proud to have him represent our country, and can’t wait to see him shine in Kyiv.”
Firebrace beat out other hot favourites The Veronicas, Samantha Jade and Nathaniel Willemse for the chance to sing for Australia.
The continental contest turns 61 this year and is responsible for launching the careers of ABBA, Celine Dion and bearded drag queen Conchita Wurst.
