The Transport Accident Commission has said it is “too early” to decide whether Joel Selwood’s licence suspension will have an impact on its partnership with the Geelong Football Club.
The Bendigo sporting identity will temporarily lose his right to drive after being booked travelling almost 30 kilometres over the speed limit on Friday.
TAC spokesperson Hamish Heard said in a statement today his organisation was fully briefed by the football club, with which it had a long-standing sponsorship arrangement.
“The club has advised they are determining appropriate action to address the disappointing actions of Joel Selwood,” Mr Heard said.
“We work closely with the Cats to ensure that all of the players and officials understand the important role they play as role models in helping us get Towards Zero.
“At this stage it is too early to make any statement about the partnership.”
TAC officials will soon meet with the club for discussions, while Mr Selwood will also be in talks with team management about whether an in-house penalty should apply.
In a statement on Saturday, the AFL club asserted its commitment to road safety, saying players were aware of their responsibility as public figures and as road users.
