Aussie stars Cam Meyer and Callum Scotson, both former winners of the Bendigo International Madison, will be the team to beat in the feature event at Tom Flood Sports Centre.
Meyer, a six-time world champion on the track, scored arguably the most brilliant win in Bendigo International Madison history in 2011 when he and partner Leigh Howard lapped the field three times.
“From the madison committee point of views it’s sensational to have such a high-calibre madison rider coming back to Bendigo,’’ Bendigo International Madison acting CEO Scott McGrory said.
“For me personally, as a passionate madison fan, watching Cam on a track bike is poetry in motion and a pleasure to watch.
“I’m sure anyone who comes out to watch Cameron in Bendigo will be impressed.”
Scotson, who won the Bendigo Madison in 2015 with Dan Fitter, has been signed by the BMC development team.
“Callum rode in the Olympics on the track last year in the team pursuit, but he’s also very talented as a road cyclist and in the time-trial and that’s wny BMC picked him up,’’ McGrory said.
“I’m sure in the next couple of years we’ll see him competing in the big road races on the world tour, but for now we can enjoy him riding on the track in Bendigo.”
McGrory said Meyer and Scotson were deserved favourites for the madison.
“They’ll be hard to beat, but at the same time we’ve seen in the past few years that it can be hard for the favourites because they get marked in the race by everyone else.”
“They’ll have to be very smart in how they race.”
Meyer and Scotson are the second high-profile team to be announced for the madison.
Earlier this week it was confirmed that Aussie track star Sam Welsord would team up with young gun Kell O’Brien.
The Bendigo International Madison will be raced on Sunday, March 12.
