Cameron Dale Allan, 44, of Jackass Flat, appeared by video link in the Bendigo Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, where he did not apply for bail.
He is facing one count of knowingly possessing images which depict a person under the age of 18 engaging in sexual activity.
Allan worked as a supervisor with the Department of Health and Human Services child protection unit but has since had his employment terminated.
He was remanded in custody to appear in court in Bendigo on March 2.
Defence counsel Marcus Williams said Allan would apply for bail at his next court appearance.
The court heard Allan requires medication for depression while in custody.
Allan was arrested on Friday after allegedly fleeing to South Australia following a raid on his Bendigo home by members of the Central Victoria Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team.
They appealed to the public to help locate Allan, who was arrested in Renmark in rural South Australia.
