Diesel attempted to escape his family’s new home and got his hind leg caught on a fence in the process.
The British Staffordshire Bull Terrier was rescued by a neighbour whose own Staffy, Boss, heard Diesel’s cries for help and alerted its owner.
Diesel was rushed to a vet where he was operated on, but is now home and recuperating. Owner Ange Connelly said she was grateful to her new neighbour for her help.
“Our neighbour’s dog heard Diesel crying and starting crying himself. When our neighbour opened her door to see what was the matter, her dog took off and went to our house,” Ms Connelly said.
“She had to remove him from the stake, which was pretty traumatising for her. Then she took Diesel to a vet. It was an amazing act of kindness.”
Ange said the family was only away from home for 30 minutes. They don’t know how long Diesel was hanging from the fence for.
“Our neighbour was covered in blood and she didn’t know how Diesel would react when she tried to help him,” she said.
Diesel had surgery the following day and will take a couple of weeks to fully recover. “The injury was right across his (right) hind leg. The vet said it just missed an artery,” Ange said.
“He is still very swollen and feeling sorry for himself but he will be around for a bit longer.” The Connelly family moved to their new Strathfieldsaye home in January.
Ms Connelly said Diesel had been good during the move. “We had only left for half a hour but in that time he tried to escape and impaled himself on a steel post,” she said.
Diesel has been with the Connelly family since 2010.
The family adopted him from the RSPCA when he was three years old.
“He was one of two dogs and was bullied. That’s how he ended up at the RSPCA,” Ange said. “Diesel is very much a family dog. I think I am his favourite but he is close to my daughter who moved to Manchester and my other daughter came home from Geelong just to see him.”
