My Kiwi Mate scored the biggest win of his career when he took out the Petstock Bendigo Pacing Cup on Friday night.
Trained by Craig Demmler and driven brilliantly by Jodi Quinlan, My Kiwi Mate ($8.50) finished strongly to run down Flaming Flutter ($5), while outsider Hotasel ($101) finished third.
Quinlan bided time back in the field and the hot tempo early in the race played into her hands.
My Kiwi Mate had a three-wide cart into the race on the back of favourite Guaranteed, peeled wide rounding the home turn and surged clear to reverse the result of last week’s Terang Cup won by Flaming Flutter.
Kiwi trotter Sunny Ruby won her second Group One on Australian soil when she stormed home to win the Maori Mile.
Defending champion Glenferrie Typhoon ($1.50 fav.) looked set to make it back-to-back wins when he sped to the lead from gate two and was afforded a comfortable run in front.
However, the six-year-old inexplicably broke with 300m remaining.
That left El Paco in front and the veteran trotter looked set to record a gutsy win until Sunny Ruby unleashed a powerful finish to hit the front in the shadows of the post. Sunny Ruby ($4.70), trained by Sonya Smith and driven by Anthony Butt, won by two metres in a mile rate of 1:56.1.
Meanwhile, leading driver Nathan Jack took the honours early in the meeting with a winning double. Jack produced two well-timed drives to win on favourites Shared Interest and Brallos Pass.
