The Bendigo golfer fired a four-under par 68 in the second round on Friday to be tied for fourth at nine-under par – four shots behind leader Brett Rumford.
The top 24 players at the end of Saturday’s third round qualify for Sunday’s final round which is matchplay format.
The top eight players after three rounds receive a bye in the first round of matchplay.
The top 24 players go head-to-head in six hole matchplay games. Winners advance to the next round, while losers are eliminated until there’s one man left standing.
Herbert has put himself in the right spot. He’s only made one bogey in the opening two rounds at Lake Karrinyup.
Herbert said he’d love to stay inside the top eight.
“Top eight is pretty key to get a break in the morning and see how the first matches play out,’’ he said after Friday’s round.
“Anything inside the top 24 I’d be pretty happy with.”
It’s a huge opportunity for Herbert, with the tournament co-sanctioned by the European and Asian tours.
Victory on Sunday would pave the way for Herbert to play in Europe for the rest of the year.
The Neangar Park golfer was in contention to win last week’s Victorian Open before a couple of mistakes late in his round proved costly.
Rather than focus on the negatives, the 21-year-old used the experience to his advantage.
“To finish the way I did (last week) was disappointing, but for some reasons internally all I wanted to do was take the positives out of the day and there were so many to take from the week.
“I came here Monday really fresh and really keen to practice, which is a bit unlike me on a Monday. Even though it was a bad finish (last week) it was positives.”
Andrew Martin won’t be playing at the weekend after he missed the cut. Martin fired rounds of 75 and 70 to be one-over par. He played solidly on Friday, mixing three birdies with one bogey.
