Normal train services on the Bendigo line are running again, less than 48 hours after one of the company’s locomotives crashed into a car abandoned on tracks near Kangaroo Flat.

Workers from Bendigo and Melbourne yesterday used two cranes to lift the 225-tonne VLocity train so its bogies – or wheels – could be fixed and placed back on the tracks, and towed to Bendigo.

The site was given the all-clear about 7pm on Thursday.

The train will be assessed and will undergo repairs before it is returned to service.

V/Line said work to repair the damaged rail and sleepers at the incident site was expected to continue for the next week.

“However trains are able to safely travel at a reduced speed along this section of track,” a statement said. 

“This will have a minimal impact on journey times.”

Some late evening Bendigo services might be replaced by coaches to help with finishing the repairs.

V/Line said customers would be notified via the V/Line website, app, Twitter, by calling 1800 800 007 or via SMS and email notifications for customers signed up to Inform.

“V/Line would like to thank customers for their patience and understanding while crews worked to clear the site and return services,” the statement said.

Staff involved in the incident have been offered support, and V/Line said it was in touch with customers to ensure they were aware of the assistance available to them.

V/Line chief operations manager Carol-Anne Nelson said yesterday up to 30 metres of rail and sleepers will need to be replaced after the incident.  

Meanwhile, police have released the driver of the abandoned car pending further investigation.

But a spokesperson from Bendigo police station, who described the case as “complex” because of the number of witnesses involved, said charges would follow.

Officers at the site of the crash yesterday referred the area as a “crime scene”. 

Debris from the collision could still be seen strewn beside the railway yesterday morning.
