The competition will be jointly run by AFL Central Victoria and AFL Goulburn Murray and is slated to start around late April or early May.
The eight clubs that have been provisionally accepted are the Bendigo Thunder’s development side, Kyneton, North Bendigo, Benalla Saints, Echuca, Kerang, Mooroopna and Shepparton.
The introduction of a senior women’s competition was announced in November and is the next step for the two regions, which both run Youth Girls competitions in Bendigo and Shepparton.
“The feedback and enthusiasm coming from clubs has been fantastic about the concept and introduction of the competition,” AFLGM regional general manager Martin Gleeson said.
“The plan was to create a sustainable league locally so that women do not have to travel to Melbourne every second week to play.
“The accepted clubs have been requested to provide a preliminary player list by March 1 to confirm their place in the league for this season and after that the competition will be finalised and a fixture prepared.”
The competition will be administered out of the AFLGM office in Shepparton.
AFLCV football development manager Tony McNamara said having eight teams keen to participate in the inaugural season demonstrated the growth in women’s football.
“No doubt the success of the AFLW has greatly helped with our women’s league coming to life, while the number of Youth Girls players is also growing,” McNamara said.
“There is a real energy around the competition and it is an exciting time as we continue to put everything into place over the next few weeks.”
There is still time for more clubs to enter, but they must adhere to the March 1 preliminary list deadline.
