From 2018, the school will be known as Catherine McAuley College in honour of the Irish nun who founded the Sisters of Mercy in 1831.
The college was formed in 1983 following the merger of Marist Brothers’ College and St Mary’s College and has about 1700 enrolled students and 240 staff.
Sister Berenice Kerr will make the announcement at the mass, which will honour year 7 and 12 students as they embark on their first and final years at the college respectively.
Sisters of Mercy of Australia and Papua New Guinea institute vicar Annette Schneider said this year would be a “transition year” for implementing the name change.
“We ask God’s blessing on everyone involved in this significant development and acknowledge with gratitude the contribution of Mercy educators over the past 140 years who have enabled the college to make the contribution it continues to make to Catholic education,” she said.
