THE Flack Advisory Bendigo Region under-16 girls capped an outstanding run to be number one at the Athletics Victoria Shield Final on Sunday at Lakeside Stadium in Melbourne.

At the end of a long and gruelling day of competition, Bendigo led Diamond Valley by 49 points.
The under-16 champions were drawn from Bendigo, Castlemaine, Echuca, Elmore, Shepparton and Swan Hill.
Bendigo was represented by 67 athletes across a variety of age groups and disciplines.
The line-up included a mix of athletes from Bendigo Harriers, Bendigo University, Eaglehawk and South Bendigo.
Highs for the under-16 girls included high-scoring performances by the Hayes sisters, Zahra in the 1500m, and Yazmin in the 2000m walk; season-best times by Abbey Hromenko in the sprint hurdles and 400m; leaps of 2.50m and 1.90m respectively by Bridget Catania and Jade Richardson at pole vault.
The under-16 girls also had Matilda Moore contest the 400m, 1500m, and 2000m steeple; Jalen Hoskin and Ella Farnell star at long jump; Emma Berg achieved a personal best in javelin; Zahli Drummond ran the 1500m; and Niah Langtree and Laura Kadri shone in the sprints.
Among the many highs were the 400m run by Tim Sullivan; the dash of Jake Hilson and Ben Powell in the 100m and 400m; consistency of Terry Hicks in the 400m and discus, and Carol Coad in the 100m and 400m.
Hurdles aces Toni Phillips, David Chisholm and Monique Gavriladis were in hot form, as were Louis Schenker, Cooper Saunders, Annette Curtis and Serryn Eenjes at javelin.
Bendigo’s points tally was lifted by the feats of Brett Gilligan and Geoff Shaw at pole vault, Kyle Murphy in long jump, Barb Bryant and Jennifer Payne in the walks action, and talented youngster Taryn Furletti in the 1500m run and steeplechase.
Stars at the discus included Anthony Messerle, Serryn Eenjes, Liam Schreck, Chris Timewell, Keely Farnell, Jayne Norton and James Woods.
In the 4 x 100m relays, Bendigo was third in the men’s open division two duel.
Other representatives in the 1500m run were Aaron Norton, open; Craig Green, Peter Cowell, Greg Hilson, David Heislers, 40-plus; Isaac Everett, under-18; Riley Osborne, Declan Osborne, Kyle Webb, under-16; Melissa Douglas and Anne Buckley, 40-plus.
Final points and standings for Bendigo Region:
Men’s open, div. 2: 4679, 6th. 417 12th. 40-plus men: 8276, 5th. Under-18 men: 2384, 10th. Under-16 boys: 5262, 6th. Under-14 boys: 2584, 9th.
40-plus women: 6458, 7th. Under-20 women: 569, 7th. Under-18 girls: 964, 11th. Under-16 girls: 8096, 1st. Under-14 girls: 5468, 6th.
The AV Shield involved clubs and regions from as far afield as Glenhuntly, Geelong, Old Scotch, Essendon, Ballarat, Sandringham, Melbourne University, Ringwood, Frankston, St Kevins, Mentone and Box Hill. Award presentations will be in April.
