Offering a dynamic display of historic, contemporary, curious and significant works from the collection, there will also be the opportunity for the community to meet artists, participate in creative workshops and family events, and discover more about the relevance of the visual arts in our lives today.
To complement the celebrations, the gallery has created an exciting program.
Art and tea
Wednesday, February 15, La Trobe Arts Institute, 121 View Street, 10am, morning tea followed by a guest speaker at 10.30am. Dr Dannielle Orr, Heritage Planner, City of Greater Bendigo, will provide an insight into the iconic Bendigo buildings and landmarks designed by William Vahland, and reflect upon the architect’s lasting contribution to our streetscape. Presented by the Friends of Bendigo Art Gallery. Free. Hearing loop available. No bookings required, limited numbers.
Artist Talk
Guan Wei, 11.30am, Thursday, March 9, La Trobe Arts Institute, 121 View Street.
Guan Wei, a winner of the Arthur Guy Memorial Painting Prize, will speak about his practice and his art, Beach 5, featured in the gallery’s current exhibition. Entry to the event is free.
Guest speaker
International Women’s Day, 11am, morning tea, 11.30am talk, Wednesday, March 8, La Trobe Arts Institute, 121 View Street. Ilona Nelson, Melbourne-based photographic and new media artist, will talk about This Wild Song, a long-term project which sees her creating photographic portraits of Australian female artists and transforming them to become a part of their work.
Pop-up studio
Tuesdays to Sundays, 10am -5pm, March 4 to May 28. Take time out during your visit to respond to the collection in our Pop-Up Studio – a zone for children and adults to reflect and create in direct response to the 130th exhibition. Try your hand at arranging objects and designing your own still life, and draw, write and respond in our collective sketchbooks. Plus keep a look out for the other Pop-Up Studio activities located throughout the gallery. Suitable for all ages and abilities.
Tours
Collective Vision Tours, 11am and 2pm, Tuesdays to Sundays, March 4 to May 28. Free introduction to the current exhibition Collective Vision: 130 years will be offered highlighting key works from the historical to contemporary. All welcome.
