The 20-year-old pleaded guilty in the Bendigo Magistrates’ Court on Monday to one count of providing a false name and address to police.
The court heard the man left the Metropolitan Hotel just after 2am on July 9, and was refused re-entry under Bendigo’s lockout laws.
He began to “cause issues” with passers-by and hotel staff, before police were called to the area.
The man provided a false name and address to police. He then suddenly ran from the scene past the town hall, down St Andrews Road and into Myers Street.
Police caught the man in a car park in Myers Street and took him back to the Bendigo police station where he was kept for several hours.
He told police he was “just trying to be funny” and “I was so drunk”.
The court heard the offending was “totally out of character”. The man wrote a letter of apology to the court.
Magistrate Sarah Leighfield said she appreciated the letter.
“I’m glad to hear that you realise your behaviour was not ideal on the night. The letter shows insight into the behaviour,” shes aid.
The man was ordered to make a $500 donation to the Salvation Army Chill Out Space – a volunteer-run initiative providing free hot chocolate for those in the area near the Park Road-Mundy Street-Pall Mall intersection.
He was also placed on a six-month good behaviour bond without conviction.
