UPDATE 12.50pm: The intersection of the Echuca-Mitiamo Road and Lockington Road has been cleared and is now reopened to traffic.
UPDATE 8.50am: A police spokeswoman said investigators believed the car was travelling east along the Echuca-Mitiamo Road when it lost control and struck a tree near Nicholson Lane about 7.35am.
She said the male driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.
The road is currently blocked off to traffic and drivers are urged to avoid the area if possible.

EARLIER: A person has died following a crash on the Echuca-Mitiamo Road in Kotta, west of Echuca, this morning.
Police have blocked off the road in the area surrounding the crash, believed to be near the intersection with Lockington Road.
