The fourth annual Axedale Quick Shear attracted people from the surrounding district for an afternoon of shearing, wood chopping demonstrations, local stalls, children’s movies and a ute show.
Shane Carmody, who helped run the shearing competition, said it was a way for all community groups in the town to help raise funds together.
“It’s just a good community day for all involved, and we’re lucky that we’re able to raise some funds at the same time,” he said.
“We normally raise about $10,000 each year to be spread to all community groups.
“We’ve got the local primary school, pre-school, hall committee, CFA, tennis club and others involved.
“By holding it on the Australia Day long weekend, we can get a few more tourists from areas near Lake Eppalock to stop by as well.”
A $2000 prize was on offer for the quickest shearer. The competition had 15 people in the open grade, 10 in the intermediate and eight learners.
With the sun beating down, the sheep were sure to be happy to be rid of their excess wool.
It was the first time the event has included a ute show.
