With less than 24 hours until the doors opened to the general public, the emergency department at the new Bendigo Hospital was quiet.
Staff took the opportunity to ensure they were familiar with their surroundings before the level of activity ramped up.
The emergency department at Stewart Street closes at 8am on Tuesday– the same time the doors of the new emergency department, at Drought Street, open.
The new Bendigo Hospital will not be open to the general public during the move. Bendigo Health has advised people not to attend unless they need urgent medical attention.
Patient visitors will be restricted to next of kin and immediate family on Tuesday, but will not be granted entry to hospital until the move is complete, after 5pm.
Bendigo Health chief executive officer John Mulder said the new emergency department meant a massive boost to capacity.
“It’s pretty much double the size of what we have at the moment,” he said.
The emergency department can still be reached on 5454 6000.
