Buchanan’s pace was almost as hot as the scorching temperatures at the Latrobe University Bendigo athletics complex in Flora Hill.
The 22-year-old completed the gruelling 3km run in 8 minutes 20.25 seconds.
The previous open record of 8:33.48 was set by Brady Threlfall from Bendigo Harriers in March, 2015.
Threlfall was runner-up in Tuesday night’s race in 8:36.70.
A superb season by Buchanan included breaking the Bendigo residential record for the 10km.
The classy athlete clocked 29:17.03 at Landy Field in Geelong.
Buchanan broke the long-held Centre record for the 1500m when he ran 3:53.83 at LUBAC in November.
Another stand-out performance on Tuesday was by Matilda Moore from Bendigo Harriers.
Athletes will race 3000m in next week’s heat of the series from 7pm.
