Girton Grammar School students Chelsea Dawson and Reuben Roessler, both 18, were calm ahead of the 2pm announcement.
The pair want to attend Monash University, with Mr Roessler opting to study a science and engineering degree and Ms Dawson aiming for a business qualification.
They also plan to live in student accommodation.
For Ms Dawson, moving to Melbourne was motivated by more than study; it meant learning life skills, including cooking.
“There’s no way I’m ever going to cook at home if I’ve got my family there to do it, but if I’m by myself, I’ll eventually learn to do it,” she said.
While confident he would secure a placement, Mr Roessler also said there were other pathways to university if results did not fall in his favour.
Teachers encouraged their classes to make backup plans, he said.
“They’ve definitely made sure to drill it into us to make sure we’ve got a second option,” he said.
Catholic College Bendigo student Leon Polychronopoulos was more anxious; he was supervising a science camp in Queensland on Tuesday, distracting himself from the impending release of results.
He applied for medical courses in almost every Australian state and territory, but is hoping to study at a Victorian university.
“Knowing that my preferences are locked in makes me a bit scared to think if I have made the right decision or not, but overall I’m trying to keep positive,” he said.
“Keeping busy has definitely helped keep my mind off things.”
Mr Roessler, who spent his summer break working in hospitality and joining in the Falls music festival, said even those given university placements could decide that lifestyle was not for them – and that was okay.
“You can pretty much do anything you want these days in regards to your career.”
VTAC will release second round and other subsequent offers from February 7.
